Avignon
For the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Collection Lambert, the City of Avignon has sought to hold a major exhibition devoted to the ever-changing, explosive work by artist Miquel Barceló, whose life and work are divided among Paris, his native Mallorca, and Mali.
The presence of Miquel Barceló reflects back on the memorable visit paid by the Kings of Mallorca when they travelled to Avignon in the 14th century to visit the Popes who had settled there, and to the major artistic event organized by Pablo Picasso in 1970, when he held one of his last big exhibits of paintings in the Palace of the Popes.
Barcelo's work will feature large paintings at the Collection Lambert, monumental sculptures, bronzes and ceramics at the Palace of the Popes.
There will also be Gothic works from Mallorca at the Petit Palais museum.
Thus the Collection Lambert will be displaying a set of works from the early 2000's, most of which have never yet been displayed, primarily paintings but also large works on paper and a selection of the famous travel notebooks.
The Collection Lambert has proposed a metaphor of the ancient term "Mare Nostrum", - that is the world linked by the Mediterranean Sea.
At the Palace of the Popes, it will be "Terra Nostra" - with bronzes outside, a giant elephant balancing on his trunk and sculptures in an interior courtyard, ceramics and plaster work, terra cotta installations in the Grande Chapelle.
Lastly, at the Petit Palais museum, a jewel box setting for medieval and Gothic art, several works, religious paintings and polychrome sculptures will be leaving the Mallorca museum for the very first time to be displayed at the same time as the Barcelo exhibit.
There is also a selection of water-colours, selected by Miquel Barceló, and painted to illustrate Dante's Divine Comedy.
A 280-page, richly illustrated catalogue with textes by authors selected by Barcelo consecrates this historic and aesthetic with an important literary dimension.
